I do no t like that. I do not like that at all.
The old man in me thinks these look fabulous.

Worst.
Transmission.
Ever.
Seriously, the Lima, OH made Jaguar based 3.9L V8 was a gem of a motor that should have been mated to a Getrag manual.

Why is that garbage so expensive?

Because Boomers.

Dude I used to drive a Geo Metro with a 3spd automatic. Don’t talk to me about engine/trans pairings. If I could still have fun with that car I’m not going to mind whatever’s in the TBird.

Nostalgia. Also they were bough t new exclusively by retirees, so they’re pretty much all low miles and in good condition.

Retro- modern cars to me are just an admission by designers that they have no new ideas. I s it t he same situation with movies where they are just remaking them to hold on to copy rights?

I liked these when they came out, and still think they look good. Auto press blasted them for having a less than rigid chassis, but I drive an old Triumph, can't imagine this being much worse.

Really? These are just terrible to drive.

I w ish the Lincoln LS could have been had with the 3.9 V8 and a Getrag. That would have been killer...

280 hp pulling around 3700lbs. Oooooof.
Chevy’s LS1 was at 310hp in 2001. Was that AJ35 really that great?

Oh god, I’d never seen the cluster before. It’s so bad. It’s like one of those TV remotes with extra large numbers for old blind people.

It actually made 350hp in the base Corvette in 2001.
The 3.9l was just fine. It was meant to provide adequate power with a gentle idle and smooth delivery. It did that well.
Also, remember that a 2001 540i had 282hp and weighed over 3700 lbs. Twas a different time.
Mind you, I’m not defending the Thunderbird. Wouldn’t dream of it.
Now a 2001 Jaguar XK8.... sign me up! I can live with the barely more powerful 4.0 version. Don't even need the blown R

Didnt these mostly sell to people who were already at retirement age in the early '00s?

I believe so. That and midlife crisis housewives.

It’s meant for cruising down main st with the top down. In what way could it possibly fail at that?
There are people out there that DD minivans and don’t have any issues with the way those drive. If the minivan driving experience is acceptable, so is this car’s no matter what it may be.
![]() 07/10/2019 at 07:33 |

Nah I’ll take the minvan every time. I’m sure it’s acceptable, so is a Pt cruiser another car I daily before I even look at a t bird. They are the worst.
![]() 07/10/2019 at 07:42 |

Can you quantify what makes it "the worst"?
![]() 07/10/2019 at 08:36 |

Driver position, I’m not a big guy by any means 5'10"/170 and if felt more cramped than an Elise (minus the actual climbing in to an Elise ).
The transmission is the actual worst, I think other oppos have mentioned that.
If feels like it is one wheel FWD (which it may be)
I drove a turquoise one just over two miles probably 10-15 years ago at this point and it left a lasting impression. I don’t know if it’s my least favorite car of all time but it’s definite top 5.
The above are “facts”
Beyond those, I don’t like the way it looks. To me it’s like the S ebring or S olara, more convertible than car.

Anyone who climbs into a car like that and expects a transcendent corner carver has a screw loose. That’s not what it’s for.

I love they way they look and those hideous color matched interiors just make me shudder. I will never drive one tho, I don’t want to burst my bubble. Kinda like the new 350z, I liked it on paper but when I drove one I was disappoint .
![]() 07/10/2019 at 13:45 |

Wow! Bold statement, taking a PT cruiser over a T-bird. I don’t like the T-bird at all (I’m under 70), but there is NOTHING that would make me want a PT. EVER.
Part of me thinks you are just trolling us for giggles....
![]() 07/10/2019 at 14:53 |

Driven both, both are ugly, the T bird drives worse.

I agree I was looking at these just last week. They're just all low miles garage queens, but the wife likes the portholes in the hardtop lol.

But that engine had problems. It is slightly finicky and needs to be upgraded for longevity (they cheapened some parts from the Jaguar version). Aside from that, it’s a sublimely-smooth engine.
